The beauty of Douglas Fir

Douglas fir is known for its beautiful natural color and grain pattern. It also has amazing strength to weight ratio, which is why it is such great option for high end construction.

Douglas fir trees are some of the tallest on our continent, averaging at 180’ in height and ranging from 2’ to 6’ in diameter. These giants are found in elevations ranging from sea level to 6,000 feet. It is also one of the most readily available species for timber in the western United States.

What is FOHC?

FOHC is timber that is milled to exclude the the center of the tree or also known as pith. Boxed heart timber is more susceptible to checking and twisting, while free of heart center timber is is more likely to structurally perform better over time as well as maintaining a better appearance. Free of heart center is only available in specific sizes and once you go above a 12×12 timber, free of heart center is harder to find and can result in longer lead times.
